APOSTAXIS
For those who are displaced, some things fit in a suitcase, while traditions from family, friends, or neighbourhoods are remembered: shaping conscious and subconscious ways of living our lives. APOSTAXIS recognises the need to distill what is important for resilience and solidarity when rebuilding in new contexts. It comprises residences, co-creation workshops and exhibitions in Ukraine and Cyprus, exploring resonances between these territories’ histories of internal and external displacement.
Under pressure from the war, public consciousness has been raised on the importance of keeping hold of tangible and intangible Ukrainian heritage that might be lost. For those who are displaced, some things fit in a suitcase whereas traditions from family, friends, or neighbourhoods are remembered: shaping the conscious and subconscious ways of living our lives.
Just as Apostaxis (gr) distills essence from the boiling points of component parts, APOSTAXIS recognises the trauma of enforced displacement and the need to distill what is important for resilience and solidarity when rebuilding in new contexts.
Against this background, we bring together 3 artists from Ukraine and 1 from Cyprus to foster cross-border exchanges on displacement through:
- 2 x 3-week joint residencies in Ternopil (UA) and Larnaca (CY) culminating in public presentations
- An exhibition for all 4 artists in Larnaca
- A digital exhibition
Artists will research historic and recent displacement, gathering knowledge on how people managed their lives amid these changes and worked to preserve traditions and intangible cultural heritage. APOSTAXIS asks: how can this knowledge help in rebuilding new lives?
This programme of international residencies and presentations builds relevant networks, capacity and audiences and offers meaningful engagement with the local cultural and voluntary sector in Ukraine and Cyprus to strengthen access, participation and integration of displaced practitioners and communities.
Against this background, joint residencies bringing together artists from different places foster cross-border exchanges on displacement. Artists will research historic and recent displacement, gathering knowledge on how people managed their lives amid these changes and worked to preserve traditions and intangible cultural heritage. APOSTAXIS asks: how can this knowledge help in rebuilding new lives?
The OPEN CALL for the Artists residency is now open. Find out more, here.
Deadline: 26 July, 2026 midnight.
